Aid arriving in Port-au-Prince
Aid from Taiwan is starting to arrive in Haiti. Tzu Chi was planning to organize distributions in the Pernier area near Port-au-Prince on Friday, January 29; and in Tabarre three days later, on February 1. Getting aid into Haiti is still difficult. But Tzu Chi is making, short-, mid-, and long-term plans for the future recovery effort. It has been over two weeks since the earthquake, that flattened Port-au-Prince, and many people are still buried under the rubble. But volunteers in the Tzu Chi relief team say the situation on the streets is calm.
< Caribbean jewel reduced to rubble >
Looking at Port-au-Prince from above, everything seems calm. Haiti - once the jewel of the Caribbean, has today been reduced to a pile of rubble. People dig with their hands though the wreckage, not giving up hope of recovering the past.
< Facing disaster with composure >
In this badly damaged area, there are countless collapsed homes. Seeing the heartbreaking sight of Haitians who have lost everything in such despair, the visiting volunteers only have praise for the survivors.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Zhuang Xinghua:
"We didn't see any rioting, or any lawlessness. Now we've been in this place for around 20 minutes, we haven't seen anyone come to harass us. So my feeling is we should hurry up. They really need every aspect of our support."
All public places have been turned into emergency shelters, but the Tzu Chi relief team volunteers say they have not seen any violence or other disturbances.
< International relief at General Hospital >
At the General Hospital, which is completely destroyed, there are still over 100 nurses trapped under the rubble.
US army soldier:
"Where are they going? They're going to another hospital. They just needed to get x-rays, so they shipped them down here, so we're going to transport them back to our 173 element, where they'll be taken care of."
< Over 1,000 international medics >
Outside General Hospital, makeshift tents to treat patients can been seen everywhere. Over 1,000 medical workers from all over the world came to Haiti immediately after the quake to save lives.
General Hospital doctor, Lesbelamse lmez:
"Four or five days after the earthquake, the situation here was bad, very bad. But right now the patients can find good care, and they have American surgeons and French Medicins Du Monde, and everybody, they have a lot of doctors here to take care of the patients. So I think the situation here is, not too bad. Not too bad."
< Hope for recovery >
With the support of the international community, there is hope that the resilient Haitian people will be able to start again.
Love prevails through tough times
More than two weeks has passed since the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that wreaked havoc in Haiti. To assist the relief efforts, Tzu Chi volunteers have been conducting a nationwide fundraising campaign in the United States. On the west coast, Tzu Chi Academy students willingly donated savings from their piggy banks. And on the east coast, a group of employees took to the streets with volunteers to reciprocate the love Tzu Chi has given them.
【New York, USA】
For Haiti's earthquake. Please help Haiti! Thank you!
< Small donation can make big difference >
Tzu Chi volunteers reach out to pedestrians out on the streets in Flushing, New York. Each dollar makes a difference, and today they have employees from Health First, a health insurance provider, to help send the message out.
Thank you very much for supporting Haiti!
< Insurance staff partner Tzu Chi >
The camaraderie between Tzu Chi and the insurance company workers was sealed during a fundraiser for 5/12 Sichuan-quake victims. So being absent from the charity event this time for Haiti, is out of the question.
Health First Insurance employee, Chen Meiying:
"Our company is working with Tzu Chi to canvass donations in public places to help Haiti. We are all extremely happy to use our time for a good cause. We hope to encourage more people and let them see the example of Tzu Chi and us too."
< Funds come pouring in >
And clearly, the public is responding well.
I don't have much money on me. It's fine. Thank you!
Are you from Tzu Chi? Yes. Thank you!
< Coast to coast response >
There is also sympathy for victims in the west coast.
【San Francisco, USA】
< Little people with a big heart >
Students of Tzu Chi's Academy in San Francisco are making their contribution; especially, 5th grader, Chen Xiaodong(陳小東), who will not let the chance to help slip away this time.
Is your name Guanxu? It's Chen Xiaodong. You're not cold. Thank you. Oh he has more coins in his pocket.
The young philanthropist gives a week's worth of allowance money; not one dime or bill is spared.
【Cupertino, USA】
Meanwhile children at Tzu Chi's Academy in Cupertino offer the money from the coin banks they have been saving up for quite a while.
< Never to late to help >
For the young do-gooders know, there are people who need the money more than them.
Student, Liao Yunshan:
"In America, we get whatever we ask for. We have food to eat, water to drink. But they don't have this in other countries. I hope all the children in Haiti will have a home to live in."
【Las Vegas, USA】
< A lesson not found in textbooks >
The children come to realize that having a home is a luxury. They learn to cherish their bounties, which their parents believe is an important life lesson.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Zhao Wuyue:
"When I heard Wenxuan(文宣) tell the children, "You see over in Haiti, people are suffering because of the earthquake, so they have nothing to eat and a lot of people are hurt." The mother fished out pocket money and had her child donate it."
< Reaching out to Haiti >
Filled with benevolence, American people of all ages will continue to the spread great love to Haiti.
Overseas fundraising
Love is still pouring into the Haitian relief fund, with donations arriving from around the globe. Despite the summer heat, In South America, Paraguayan Tzu Chi volunteers turned out to canvass the public for funds. In Durban, South Africa, Tzu Chi volunteers were joined in similar fundraising efforts by local students, while back in Asia, in the multicultural country of Malaysia, people from all ethnic backgrounds united to send their love to Haiti.
【 Malaysia】
< Love has no boundary >
Tzu Chi Volunteer, Chen Zhongan:
"I am very nervous, it's my first time at a benefit."
Tzu Chi volunteer, Lin Huixian:
"There are many kind people out there."
Tzu Chi volunteer, Huang Shunxing:
"Of course we should try!"
Despite their fears, these shy first-time canvassers here in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, are out in force. Donors included overseas Chinese, local Malays, and ethnic Indians -- each as loving as the next.
Donor, Rosminah:
"The disaster victims are facing hardship right now. We need to empathize with them. As long as the money is going to help people, I am willing to contribute."
【 South Africa 】
< Volunteers join force with locals >
On the southern hemisphere, in South Africa's Durban, Tzu Chi volunteers were also gathering love for Haiti.
Help Haiti with love. Come on Tzu Chi!
The Zulu volunteers were joined by local students, offering up prayers for Haiti and promoting vegetarianism as they worked.
【 Paraguay 】
< Giving whether poor or rich >
In South America, Paraguay is burning through summer in 37 degree heat. Though the poverty gap is obvious, volunteers welcome donations from whatever locals wish to contribute, breaking down personal barriers with their kind sincerity.
When we have something, let us cherish it. When we do not, let us be content.
Donation from a brain tumor patient
< Here's US Tzu Chi 360 >
And now we hand over the next segment to US Tzu Chi 360 with Johnny Chang.
Greetings from US Tzu Chi 360, I am Johnny Chang. On August 22, 2009, Tzu Chi's Orange County office received a 500-hundred-dollar check for Typhoon Morakot survivors. This was not just any contribution; Lina Feng at 31 is a young woman who is currently fighting a brain tumor. Today, we share the story of Lina, a brave cancer survivor, and how humanity managed to shine through its darkest moments.
< Daily hospital visit >
Before the sun rises early every morning, Feng Zaibao from Northeast Mainland China rides a bicycle to the hospital for his daughter, Lina, who is hospitalized because of the brain tumor.
Lina's father, Feng Zaibao:
"I arrived at Los Angeles in the afternoon of July 27th. It has been more than one month after her surgery. She was in the bed when I came. She was so excited when she saw me. Her left elbow and left leg couldn't move. I really felt like the world was collapsing."
< Health is most important >
Lina Feng:
"Because Daddy has a heart problem. I was afraid of letting him know. I used to think that making more money and working harder would give my life meaning, but now I no longer feel that way. I think the most important thing is to have a peaceful and healthy life."
< Providing comfort food >
On the wall of Lina's hospital room is a photo of her when she was healthy. This beautiful girl in the photo came to the States with a beautiful dream, but was taken down by illness within a year. The worried father stays by the bedside, day and night.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Hsien Ma:
"Mr. Feng doesn't speak English. He has never been to the United States, and doesn't have time to cook.
We thought that if we all took turns to see Lina, we can bring something for him to eat. I think that's a good idea. So, we've been taking turns bringing him food."
< Learning about Tzu Chi fundraising >
Unable to witness this worried father eating unfamiliar food such as pizza and coke everyday, Tzu Chi volunteers reached a tacit understanding and began bringing meals for Feng Zaibao.
Lina's father, Feng Zaibao:
Everyday, there is someone coming to see her. After Typhoon Morakot, most Tzu Chi volunteers were fundraising on the streets. They were busy and didn't visit her for a few days. My daughter asked me, "Daddy, I realized fewer Tzu Chi people were visiting us these past two days." I said, "Taiwan had a flood disaster. They are raising money on the streets." After that, I turned on the TV and let her watch it. Seeing the flood on TV, my daughter said to me, "Dad, I am thinking of donating some money." I was very surprised to hear that. I was very, very happy. I never thought of my daughter, who is lying on a hospital bed, would say things like that. I said, "OK." I said that I would give her money. But, she said, "No need to." She said she had a few savings left with her friends and when her friend came to visit, she would have him bring $500 for donation.
< Immediately donates whole-heartily >
So Tzu Chi received a 500-dollar check, a sign of Lina's appreciation.
Lina Feng:
"I think these people are the ones that really need our help. So I must get well soon to be able to assist those who are truly in need of help."
Lina's father, Feng Zaibao:
"Since my daughter became sick, we've gotten to know many people. It's very precious to us. I am grateful to Tzu Chi and Master Cheng Yen. She has truly brought us so many good people."
< Joining Tzu Chi volunteer team >
It is the father and the daughter's hope that Lina will get better soon and be the first Tzu Chi volunteer in Northeast China.
Lina's father, Feng Zaibao:
"Let's join Tzu Chi!"
You promised. You will to join Tzu Chi!
Positively yes. I've made up my mind. I've decided to be a Tzu Chi volunteer when I was in the hospital. I'm really moved.
Really. You are our Tzu Chi volunteer now. Let's do it together. Let's do it together!
Truly, I am very grateful.
That's nothing. Come. Let's do it together. You and your father join Tzu Chi together, if you are in Northeast Mainland China. It doesn't matter where you are.
Yes, Yes. If you're in Los Angeles, you can be a Tzu Chi volunteer along with Sister Shu-Shen and Sister Qi-Zhen. She said to me, "When I get better, I will follow Martin and join Tzu Chi. Dad can be a volunteer in Harbin. We'll keep in touch. "
What did you call me when you saw me?
Lina Feng:
"Handsome Brother Martin."
< Return home to a loving world >
On November 9th, 2009, Lina and her father left the United States for their hometown in Mainland China. One year ago, Lina came to the country with a beautiful dream; one year later, she returns home with an ill body. It seems as though her dream became a nightmare, but the working of karma is indescribable. A brain tumor turned over a new page which changed her life, making her discover a brave self and a loving world.
Winter aid packing events island-wide
Tzu Chi's winter distributions in Taiwan involve putting together gift packages, and delivering them to the care receiving households around the island, before the Chinese New Year. This year, across Taiwan, 35 distribution events are scheduled to take place between January 30 to February 7. More than 20,000 families will receive gift packages containing Tzu Chi's multigrain porridge, biscuits, toiletries and other supplies . Let's go to Taipei's Guandu (關渡) and Xizhi (汐止), and the counties of Taoyuan (桃園) and Hualien (花蓮), to take a look at the winter aid packing events that are full of festive hustle and bustle.
< Delivering seasonal greetings >
This is a red envelope from Tzu Chi's Master, wishing you all a prosperous New Year!
As the Chinese New Year nears, Tzu Chi volunteers all over Taiwan have been visiting care recipients to offer their season's greeting, and delivering specially packed gift packages and sweet, familial warmth.
Love me, love you. We are a family!
< Gifts for 20,000+ care recipients >
Around this time every year, it has been a tradition for various Tzu Chi chapters across the island to pack aid packages for care recipients as part of the annual winter distribution. In Hualien's Jing Si Abode, volunteers make up several production lines, and with zesty momentum put together these care packages with food, toiletries and daily essentials.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Zhang Shumei:
"We arrange the supplies neatly in the bag to show our respect for our care recipients."
< Care-recipient volunteers >
In Taoyuan County, and also Taipei's Xizhi and Guandu, the same festive hustle and bustle can be seen. Care-recipient turned volunteer Li Peizhen (李佩真) finds her participation in the gift-packing extra meaningful, as she recalls how Tzu Chi helped her through her divorce and illness.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Li Peizhen:
"Tzu Chi volunteers helped me and cared for me a lot when I was sick. They visited me often and gave me food and other things, unconditionally. So I come here today to reciprocate Tzu Chi's love."
< Lian Minling: A reciprocation of love >
The same spirit of perpetuating goodwill is also seen at the winter aid packing event in Guandu. Care recipient Lian Minling (連敏伶) is here with her mother for a memorable day.
Care recipient, Lian Minling:
"Though we are a low-income household, we can still come to help people who are in more trouble than us. It makes us very happy - like a dream come true!"
< Parcels of love and warmth >
It is hoped that these parcels of love- bursting with fresh food and other living essentials- will evoke feelings of warmth and joy that will brighten the homes that receive them for the New Year.
Goodness in each can
Around Chinese New Year, regardless of whether it's a blessing ceremony, or a winter distribution, participants all receive the same thing: a can of Pearls of Fortune and Wisdom Porridge The can of this delicious snack can be turned into a small coin-bank when finished. Here's a look on how this dessert is made.
< Familiar to all of Tzu Chi >
Da Ai TV reporter, Ni Mingjun:
"At Year's End Blessing Ceremonies, every participant receives a can of Pearls of Fortune and Wisdom Porridge; it is a well-liked, one-of-a-kind item - so have you ever wondered how it is made?"
< Hygiene is paramount >
Wash everything - that's the first step. Even new cans are washed: cleanliness is hygienic. That's fundamental: even our ceilings are spotless.
< But where's the big pot? >
Some of the foodstuff from the multigrain porridge must be pressure cooked first, so that everything gets done. Red azukis must reach 105 degrees for 11 minutes. Peanuts, 108 for 15. Following that, the food travels through a canning machine, where 92 percent sugar solution is added, just before they are pasteurized and sealed.
< Each can made individually >
You might have thought that the porridge is all cooked in the same vat, and then canned. In actuality, the ingredients and sugar are first poured into the can, and it is only then that the food is pasteurized. 4,300 cans at a time are heated to 121 degrees, for 50 minutes; the oven must also rotate, to distribute the heat evenly and keep lumps from forming.
< Canned -- but still cooking! >
But it is not yet ready for sale, because the whole oats inside need one more week to soften. Before the can will reach your table, it must undergo several tests. First an external inspection, where the edges and width are measured. Then there is the internal inspection, with close attention given to the rim-seals. These must be done every four hours.
< Taste tested >
At the same time, quality control becomes necessary; it is weighed, and the internal pressure measured. Then, a sample is taken, and the PH and sugar levels are tested. Next, the weight of the solid "treasures" is measured, and the mixture gauged for impurities. Only then is the product chewed, slurped, and tasted to see if it's a success.
< Reminding all to cherish blessings >
That is the long process that creates this delicious little gift of porridge. This has been going on for 10 years! The cans can become coin-banks, so the children can also help, to build hospitals, or schools. This small can of sweet, soupy porridge is full of great blessings and goodness. So next time you are given some Pearls of Fortune and Wisdom Porridge, you should cherish it, re-use it, and make sure it lives up to its name.
Care of the body, care of the mind
When caring for cancer patients, treating the disease is important, but supporting the person is equally so. In Tzu Chi Hospital's Taichung branch, we introduce to you two doctors who not only do their best to battle the disease, but also really put in an effort to support the cancer patients.
< Early to rise, to provide an ear to listen >
Qiu Jianming always wakes early, so he may visit the patients of his ward, and listen to their needs.
Patient and Dr. Qiu Jianming:
Three blankets -- the heat almost killed me.
You almost died, huh? Why though?
I was feeling very cold.
< Not merely indulgence >
Even if it is only small indulgences, Dr. Qiu knows kindness eases much. When he was an intern, his mother developed breast cancer. Qiu was the one typically at her bedside. As an expert on cancer now, he often revisits his feelings from that time.
Cancer patient, Wang Congxiu:
"He listens closely to patients, and our families' complaints. And he explains every single point - and clearly, too."
< Situations do arise >
Wang Congxiu (王聰繡)is fighting rectal cancer; on the day he arrived for surgery, his family scolded Dr. Qiu for being late to the consultation. Dr. Qiu didn't get angry; instead, after the surgery, he waited into the night, until his patient awakened.
Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, Dr. Qiu Jianming:
"The patient lacked direction; that's why his attitude was so negative. We don't want to bicker with people. We need to be saying: Here's your health plan. Give them something to set their hearts to."
< Experience with mother helps Qiu >
This sympathy for patients was born of harsh experience. Though Dr. Qiu's mother was diagnosed and treated at the hospital where he did his internship, the cold attitudes of the medical staff left him deeply affected, and determined to always give more love, and empathy.
Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, Dr. Qiu Jianming:
"Working with patients is almost like a way to repay my mother's love for me."
< Breaking bad news in a gentle way >
Tumor specialist Dr. Yao Chaoyuan (姚朝元) shares a similar spirit.
Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, Dr. Yao Chaoyuan:
"Well, the bad cells are what we call the malignant ones."
When giving bad news, Dr. Yao strives for a dry, patient, and gentle sense of humor.
< Always looking for the smile >
When Dr. Yao's in the room, it's a rare patient who doesn't smile.
Patient, He Shunfu:
"He draws your interest. He doesn't need to say anything. You get this feeling, and you smile."
Unable to immediately deliver patients from their pain, Yao's reports often seem like judgments from on high. Understanding how the illness develops, Dr. Yao strives to keep things as light and easy as possible, enlisting laughter to help fight the sickness.
Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, Dr. Yao Chaoyuan:
"My idol is Stephen Chow. He's my spiritual guide. Whatever situation I encounter, I always try and find the humor in it."
< A happy heart is the best medicine >
Treating sickness means easing hearts; this is a dear truth every patient and their loved ones hope their doctors understand.
