1. µá117¦¸¸q¶E Keeping the light from fading

Tzu Chi-Philippines has long been helping local people suffering from eye disease through the many free clinics it sponsors. And it is not just Filipinos who come to the clinics. Recently a Korean church pastor sought out Tzu Chi's help, in hopes of finding treatment for members of his congregation in need of medical help. Altogether, recently 116 cataract patients and 7 pterygium patients were treated.

< The bitterness of fading sight >
When reading news paper, Angelo Martinez must bring it close so he can see the words -- because of cataracts. Angelo's eyesight has badly deteriorated. Like many others, he has come to Tzu Chi's Manila clinic to recover his sight.

Patient, Angelo Martinez:
"I am full of happiness, because the surgery was a great success. With the cataracts gone, I feel better; before the surgery, I could only see with one eye. Now I can use both."

< A Korean abroad >
The Korean minister of a Manila church heard that Tzu Chi has been holding free clinics for a long time, and sought them out because he hoped to help his church members with their eye problems. After his experiences with the volunteers, he has joined their teams in raising money.

Korean priest in Manila, Sonny Aguilar:
"I just feel inexpressible joy, because I have helped my own people. Although it will only be a small help, I will encourage our members to donate money to Tzu Chi's bamboo banks."

Ricardo Marcela came to the clinic accompanied by his wife; they came to the clinic expecting to have an operation, and feel both trepidation and eager expectation.

Patient, Ricardo Marcelo:
"At 6pm in the afternoon, the light gets so bright that I can't see the car in front of me. So I can't drive anymore."

< Sight restored after successful surgery! >
After a successful surgery, Ricardo's wife is soaring with a happiness that shines. Ricardo was also quick to share his joy with all of his fellow church members.

Patient, Ricardo Marcelo:
"Tzu Chi did this surgery for me and now my eyes are better. I am so truly thankful to the doctor who did the surgery."

< Embracing the Great Love >
This is the Great Love that knows no boundaries. No matter your religion, ethnicity, or nationality, Tzu Chi wishes only to wipe the darkness from your eyes and return you to brightness -- the brightness of humanity.

2. ´µ¤HÂå¯ù·| Tea party to promote TIMA

At a major free clinic organized by TIMA in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka, one of the local medical workers to take part was the Chief Officer of the Ratnapura Department of Health. Later, he and two of his colleagues went to the TIMA conference in Taiwan, where they were deeply touched, and soon became the first TIMA members from Sri Lanka! When they returned to their country, they organized a tea party to tell their colleagues all about the association.

< Touched by angels in blue and white >
Seeing Tzu Chi volunteers putting Buddhism in action has given me hope that one day, we will do the same. Then, we'll be able to do something meaningful in life.

At this tea ceremony, Mr. Kapila Bimal Kannagara is sharing his wonderful experiences during his visit to Tzu Chi's heartland in Taiwan. As the first TIMA seedling in Sri Lanka, the Chief Officer of the Department of Health in Ratnapura, hopes the story will light the lamp in the hearts of others to join.

Department of Health chief officer, Kapila Bimal Kannagara:
In the future, what I'm planning is to get more people, one by one. Let them go through all the details and messages; then for them to make up their mind to say: "okay this is it, this is what we want in life".

< The seeds of great love sowed in 2004 >
To help the attendees better understand the Buddhist NGO, footage is shown of when Tzu Chi first arrived for emergency relief disaster work in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. Now, five years later, volunteers' tireless efforts are still on-going.

Tzu Chi's Singapore Chapter Director, David Liu:
"We hope we can organize a certain team, to cooperate with our Singapore TIMA. Then, we hope in the future, all the medical missions in Sri Lanka can be done by the local people."

< The seedlings are ready to sprout buds >
The director of a nursing school, Dhammika and 49 nurses who are at the tea ceremony have been inspired to follow the Bodhisattva path.

Nursing school director, Dhammika:
"Even though poor, we don't ever think about that money, which we get. We always have to think about serving our nation."

< Nurses sign up for TIMA >
Truly believing nothing is more rewarding than a bounteous heart, the new seedlings eagerly fill out the TIMA membership application.

Back on July 9th, in China's Yunnan Province, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake injured nearly 400 people and toppled some 14,000 houses. Recently, Tzu Chi volunteers revisited Guantun Township (©x¤Ù) - after evaluating the situation, Tzu Chi plans to hold an aid distribution for the 16,000 or so residents, giving them gifts of blankets, food and winter clothes for the Chinese New Year.

< July 9, 2009- magnitude 6 quake >
Why don't you take this route today?

On July 9th, 2009, a magnitude 6 earthquake rocked Guantun (©x¤Ù) Township in Yaoan («À¦w) County. More than 14,000 buildings were damaged, and many residents are still homeless, taking shelter in shabby tents.

Hi Grandpa! Let me help you.
Thank you!
We are from Taiwan.

< Tzu Chi's care moved victims to tears >
The volunteer helps Mr. Dong wipe his runny nose.

Grandpa, how long have you been staying here?

The old man's leg was injured during the earthquake, and he has needed a walking stick ever since. His house measures a mere three square meters of floor space; the volunteers' heartwarming presence moves the humble Mr. Dong to tears.

Grandpa, our blessings to you forever.

In another tent, upon seeing Tzu Chi volunteers an old woman's tears shoot down her cheeks.

Grandma, don't cry, don't cry!

With a harsh winter fast approaching and no solid home to shelter in, it is hard for anyone to hold back tears.

< Food, daily supplies & clothes on their way >
19 volunteers from Kunming and greater Shanghai and have joined together to survey the disaster areas, to get a better understanding of Guantun residents' needs. An aid distribution has been slated to take place before the Chinese New Year, providing rice, cooking oil, winter clothes and other essentials. Tzu Chi's care will send a warm current into the township, making this winter bearable for the 16,000 or so people.

4. ¥Ê¦a°¨©Ô©@°Ø A humble coffee grower

The Central American nation of Guatemala is one of the five biggest coffee exporters to Taiwan. In our continuing series of reports from Guatemala, we meet Martin Keller, a humble coffee plantation owner. Not only has he helped Tzu Chi in disaster relief operations, he also runs an elementary school for his workers' children, and practices organic farming methods, to protect the local ecology. Here is Martin's story.

< 3 active volcanoes surround the capital >
The capital of Guatemala, Guatemala City, is surrounded by mountains. In fact, there are 3 active volcanoes right by the capital. The white and grey fumes rising from the volcanoes remind us how insignificant we are in front of their destructive power.

< Plane owner and pilot - Martin Keller >
The plane is piloted by its owner, Martin Keller, who kindly is giving the Da Ai crew a tour of the city. Martin first came in contact with Tzu Chi in 2005.

< Helping Tzu Chi after Hurricane Stan >
Back then Hurricane Stan ravaged Guatemala. Tzu Chi volunteers from the US came down to join local volunteers in disaster relief. Due to many destroyed roads, Tzu Chi volunteers solicited the help of Martin and his plane to properly assess the damage.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Wu Mugui:
"If we traveled by road, it would have taken us over 4 hours to get to our destination. With his help and his plane, we got there in about half an hour."

Coffee grower, Martin Keller:
"I believe that by doing these small changes everybody will benefit from it."

< 3rd generation German coffee grower >
A third generation of German descent, Martin runs his family's coffee plantation. His airplane is a vital means of transportation. Martin always considers himself a Guatemalan and loves this country.

< Employing eco-friendly organic farming >
That is why he grows his coffee organically.

Coffee grower, Martin Keller:
"As you can see there are a lot butterflies and a lot of birds. We have about 500 species of birds. We don't use any chemicals anymore. We use coffee shells. We use weeds. We use trimmed limbs and trimmed leaves. So everything has to be ecologically sound and balanced for the tree to be happy and to produce well."

< Quality coffee enjoyed worldwide >
One of the major exports of Guatemala is coffee. For every 100 cups of Starbucks coffee sold, two would be from Martin's beans. Considering the numbers of cups Starbucks sells around the world, it quickly adds up. Every cup of coffee from Martin's plantation has passed high quality control standards.

The louder you slurp it the better?

Coffee grower, Martin Keller:
"When you slurp it in, your tongue has different positions so when the coffee goes in with turbulence, you can taste it a lot deeper, a lot better."

< Showing compassion to workers >
Martin's love for this land is as deep and rich as his coffee.

Buenos~ Buenos dias~

< School for plantation workers' children >
This elementary school was founded by Martin's grandfather 35 years ago. It was built so the plantation workers' children could get an education. 35 years later, Martin continues to maintain and run the school. Situated in the remote mountain area, the school even has a computer classroom. All the students are well disciplined in and out of the class.

Tzu Chi!

< Walking humbly with compassion >
Though Martin is the boss of 1,500 employees, he remains humble and grounded. He runs both the coffee plantation and the school with passion by showing compassion to both the environment and his employees.

5. ³¯¥©¸©´N¾Ç Tzu Chi scholarship for Chen Qiaoxuan

Returning to Taiwan, as we have been seeing for the past week, Tzu Chi's scholarship program has helped countless impoverished students realize their dreams. Today we meet another young woman with a happy story: Chen Qiaoxuan(³¯¥©¸©), who has soared into National Taiwan University's Department of Veterinary Medicine.

< Tiny house, big dreams >
This 33-square-meter living room is crowded with seven studious children. They take turns using the family's dining table to write their homework. It may seem an unpromising studying environment, but the eldest daughter here, has nonetheless been accepted into the National Taiwan University.

Eldest daughter, Chen Qiaoxuan:
"I feel that this is a responsibility. My parents toiled so much; now that I've been accepted into a good school, I will have better opportunities in the future."

< Entry into National Taiwan University >
Qiaoxuan received numerous commendations throughout her schooling, including scholarships that were used to help with their family's economic plight. When she was in high school, Tzu Chi paid her tuition through their scholarship relief program. Now, they will continue to fund her university education.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Jiang Yuexia:
"When I first came here, I knew these children were very studious. None of them had gone to a cram school, but each is in the top three of his or her respective class."

< Scholarships helped with family's plight >
Though this family is in straitened circumstances, the parents have never complained. Even after a work accident, and suffering through the economic downturn, the father has remained optimistic. Perhaps it was destiny when Tzu Chi stepped in to help with their problem finding enough money for tuition.

Father, Chen Huanbiao:
"These volunteer aunties and uncles don't know us, but they care about greater society, so they came to help us educate them. In the future, when they grow up, they must contribute all they can to give what they can back."

< More ways to cherish blessings >
The father's words trickled deep into his children - the eldest brother has joined the Tzu Shao class, and four other siblings joined a parent-children learning camp with their mother. These obedient girls and boys are now discovering more ways to cherish their blessings.

Fifth daughter, Chen Xinjie:
"I've learned to be grateful - be grateful to dad and mom for raising us."

After joining the Tzu Ching club in university, Qiaoxuan is always hoping to reciprocate the love she received.

Eldest daughter, Chen Qiaoxuan:
"After we met the aunties and uncles, we felt they have a lot of love. So, I want to take care of others, too."

Undeterred by poverty or hardship, the Chen family has found a spiritually rich existence by supporting one another, through thick and thin.

6. µµ´³¤kµ£ Irrepressible 5th grader Zheng Xuanxuan

Zheng Xuanxuan(¾G¸©Þ±) is a fifth year student at Xinshang(·s¤W) Elementary School in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. She comes from a single parent family, and her mother has a form of lupus called SLE. The disease stops her mother from getting a stable job, so Xuanxuan's family is classified as a low-income household. But no one was ready for the shock that the young girl would be diagnosed with the bleeding disease ITP. Although life is hard, Xuanxuan is an outgoing and outstanding student, who has always won scholarships, which she gives to her mother so they can be spent on her mother's medical treatment.

< ITP illness doesn't hold back Xuanxuan >
These school children are practicing for a Taiwanese folk tune competition. In the first row is enthusiastic Zheng Xuanxuan(¾G¸©Þ±), who loves to sing and dance. Even though she has the bleeding condition ITP, which requires long-term treatment, Xuanxuan does not shy from the spotlight.

Kaohsiung Xinshang Elementary student, Zheng Xuanxuan:
"If I do better at school, mom won't have to worry about me. Mom always keeps me company, so I have to be good to her."

< Student works hard to help single mom >
Struggling to overcome her own problems, Xuanxuan never forgets her mother. From a single parent family, which has no steady income because of her mother's ill health, the fifth grader already has a lot on her plate. Yet in class she concentrates hard, hoping to win scholarships with good grades, and use the money to take some pressure off her mother.

Kaohsiung Xinshang Elementary student, Zheng Xuanxuan:
"Every time I get a scholarship I give the money to mom, so she has some money to buy medicine, and make her illness better."

< Undefeated by illness >
Listening to Xuanxuan, who shows maturity beyond her years, your heart goes out to her. Undefeated by her illness, the optimistic and resilient child is an emotional pillar of support for her mother.

7. À¹¥É´D Overcoming life's hurdles

It's hard not to care when others make comments about you. It is even more difficult to marry someone you hardly know. But that's exactly what Tzu Chi volunteer Dai Yuyuan(À¹¥É´D) went through. To make matters worse, just when she finally settled down, she discovered she had a potentially life-threatening illness. Despite all her adversities, she has decided to face each day with a positive attitude. Here is her story.

< Magnetic Dai Yuyuan >
It's difficult not to take notice of her in the crowd. Wearing a colorful attention-grabbing headband, one might mistake her as a fashion guru. Resembling her vibrant personality, the vivid headgear has become her trademark.

< Life took a 180 after joining Tzu Chi >
This is Dai Yuyuan, not your typical Tzu Chi member, who's life was changed180 degrees after encountering Tzu Chi..

Tzu Chi member, Dai Yuyuan:
"Those who knew me knew I was very unhappy. I was living by other's opinions of me, always wondering what others thought about me. I changed completely after I encountered Tzu Chi and Master Cheng Yen."

Dai Yuyuan's Husband, Jian Maosen:
"Our relationship improved a lot after she joined Tzu Chi. That's the truth. Really, a lot. For example, when we have confrontations, we are a lot calmer now. If it was before, gosh, it was like war. Ha ha~"

< The secret behind the headband >
There is more than meets the eyes to the headbands Dai Yuyuan wears.

Tzu Chi member, Dai Yuyuan:
"The headband is not a fashion accessory. It helps minimize my head aches."

< Life threatening illness out of the blue >
To understand the cause of Dai Yuyuan's headache, we will have to go back to 1999 where her life took a major unfortunate twist as she performed sign language on stage.

Tzu Chi member, Dai Yuyuan:
"As I was performing the sign language, I felt a jolt to the right side of my head. I screamed in agony. I thought my life was coming to an end as I began vomiting out of control on the stage."

< Nearly fatal subarachnoid hemorrhage >
Dai Yuyuan suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Doctors performed a craniotomy and clipped six aneurisms.

Tzu Chi member, Dai Yuyuan:
"My whole face was split open and had become crooked. I thought, just as I had finally found my way and was going to commit my life to a higher purpose then this happened."

< 3 more aneurisms discovered in 2006 >
Though Dai Yuyuan would eventually recover from this near death experience with the support of her friends, family, and her unwavering faith, she was dealt another serious blow in 2006, when doctors discovered more aneurysms in her brain.

< New technique treats Dai Yuyuan >
The doctors decided to operate this time by using a technique known as coiling, which was done by inserting a catheter into her arteries and working it up to her brain. In the end, the doctors managed to treat a total of three aneurysms. Dai Yuyuan said it was as if her sins have been washed away, and she was reborn.

< Family and faith kept her going >
Having survived several close encounters with death, Dai Yuyuan jokes that she must be gifted to be given so many tests. The love of her husband and family has given her the strength to endure these ordeals.

< Hoping to leave her marks in life >
Dai Yuyuan notices she is chattier now. She said it was a side effect of the craniotomy - a sort of gift. She now brings laughter and smiles everywhere she travels. Just as she left footprints in her walk on the beach, so she hopes to leave her mark.

8. ²©ö«Î¬ãµo Latest prefab housing model

Be it locally or abroad, the challenges Tzu Chi volunteers face in post-disaster relief work may vary, but one of the necessities are temporary shelters, to keep disaster victims save. Currently, Tzu Chi International Humanitarian Aid Association is developing a simple home model that can be easily set up at disaster sites. With its comprehensive yet lightweight design, the prefab housing unit is fire-proof and well ventilated; and even a solar panel can be added to supply power.

< Simple house for family of four >
This is the latest prefab housing model from Tzu Chi International Humanitarian Aid Association: five meters long, three meters wide, and three meters tall. The dimensions boast an indoor space of nearly 16 square meters - enough for a family of four to temporarily find shelter.

< Lightweight fiberglass frame >
Though it's called a simple house, it works like a mobile tent. With its frame made of fiberglass rather than steel, the total weight is drastically reduced by a third. And the hours and people required for assembly? Three and three.

< Natural lighting & ventilation >
The white canvass takes in daylight and saves on electricity during the day. A unique ventilation system also allows natural air flow, without the use of a fan.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Luo Zhongyou:
"The air is ventilated from all four sides. Up and down. The hot air flows out as the heat rises above. Everything is taken into consideration."

< Fire-proof material safe for cooking >
The simple prefab house can also be turned into a temporary kitchen for volunteer cooks helping out in disaster areas. The roof is equipped with a wind-powered vent, to extract smoke. The canvass can also be replaced by fire-proof material which can resist 117 degrees Celsius heat.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Luo Zhongyou:
"The current temperature now, from the canvass surface is 26 degrees Celsius. We will test its resistance to fire. We're now using a torch. You see, 76, 89, 102, 111, and now it's to the highest! Already 116 degrees Celsius, and this canvass is still not burning!"

< Solar panel recharges electrical items >
The multi-functional house can also be used as a coordination center and medical service point in disaster areas. By simply attaching a soft solar panel, appliances can be instantly recharged. Over seven types of electrical items may be powered by this rechargeable battery.

The simple house is still in its developing phase, but the sincere efforts of the men behind this work are already taking root.
