1.Ĭ¥_¥ú©ú¦æ°Ê< Record year for sight restoration program >

Since 2005, Tzu Chi volunteers in China's Jiangsu region have been running a vision restoration program. Many poor local people have cataracts in their eyes but no money for treatment. After the issue came to their attention, Tzu Chi volunteers organized a program to recover these people's eyesight. This year a total of 1,950 patients received sight-saving operations in the Suyu(±J¿Ý) and Sucheng(±J«°) districts of Suqian(±J¾E) City, as well as the three counties of Siyang(ªr¶§), Sihong(ªr¬x), and Shuyang(Ìõ¶§). From 2005-2007, 1,400 patients were treated. This year alone, nearly 2,000 people have undergone cataract surgery.

< Grand opening of eye surgery program >

On this crisp autumn morning there is already a chill in the air. Tzu Chi volunteers have brought a message of love to the cold atmosphere.

"Tzu Chi Foundation Sucheng District, Suqian City, cataracts patient vision restoration surgery grand opening!"

< Family connection with Jiangsu >

Volunteers have been running a vision restoration program since 2005, because they feel a family-like connection with the people here.

Patient: "I can't see your face. I can't see you eyes. I can only see a blurry image of you."

< Poor villagers get cataract operations >

This patient's blurry vision is caused by cataracts. Unwilling to go to the doctor, and unable to afford treatment, the elderly woman chose to put up with her condition until she went blind. Understanding the problems of villagers, Tzu Chi reached out a helping hand to help restore the patients' vision.

"How many fingers? 2."
"How many now? 5."
"How many now? 4."
"Right!"
"You win a prize! Congratulations, here's a candy!"
"Thank you!"

< Patients' relatives moved to tears >

Family members are moved to tears.

< Patient's relative >

You coming here moves me very deeply. You're amazing, and very loving.

Patient's relative, Li Yun: "Thank you to your Foundation for saving my father, by helping restore his vision."

A farmer's daughter, forced to leave the area to find work, Li Yun(§õ¶³) never stops thinking about her father, who needs to be cared for at home. Now the weight that was on her mind has finally been lifted.

< Tzu Chi helps patients see again >

Just like them in 2009, in the counties of Siyang(ªr¶§), Sihong(ªr¬x) and Shuyang(Ìõ¶§), as well as the districts of Suyu(±J¿Ý) and Sucheng(±J«°), nearly 2,000 cataract patients received surgery with the help of Tzu Chi. (CGout) The volunteers efforts have been acknowledged.

"Thank you Taiwan Tzu Chi Foundation. Taiwan's vision restoration program shows the feeling of compatriotism across the Strait, as today building harmony on both sides, and striving together for Chinese peace"

< New vision for a brighter future >

Here in the Jiangsu region of China, renewed clarity, enlightenment, and a new vision seems to breathe new life into the auditorium, which is full of bright sunny smiles.

2.¥|¤tÀô«O®Õ¶é< Raising awareness of conservation >

Staying in China, the province of Sichuan hit the headlines in May of last year when a massive earthquake struck the region. Tzu Chi volunteers have been nursing shaken communities back to health, for the past year and a half. Traveling from Taiwan to Sichuan in successive groups, they have been delivering a constant supply of love and care. This time, volunteers returned to Luoshui Town, to visit local students. The caregivers also took the opportunity to raise awareness of conservation, and show the children how to properly recycle their garbage.

< First exposure to recycling >

Putting on thick gloves, these students are going to give recycling a try for the first time. The cast-offs are separated into different piles after careful consideration. It is Tzu Chi's fourth time to promote environmentalism at the school.

Luoshui Middle School teacher, Zhang Qinglong: "Tzu Chi volunteers lead by example, which is very inspirational for us teachers. They have done a lot for our school, we still hope that they can continue giving us lessons on conservation, and on the humanities, too."

< Involving school and community >

Outside, children are scrambling to get a glimpse of the lesson that is taking place in the classroom. Inside, the class reps listen attentively, for they will be passing on the conservation knowledge to their peers.

Luoshui Middle School student, Luo Jiayu: "I will begin with myself and promote it to the public, to all those around me. I want everyone to be eco-conscious. Let's all get involved in recycling work."

< Positive social influence in Sichuan >

Since the earthquake, Tzu Chi's assistance has become a constant force of support and a positive influence for local volunteers.

Sichuan volunteer, Ma Guozhen: "Before, playing mahjong took up all my free time. Now, my hands have found their new purpose in recycling."

Sichuan volunteer, Yang Yunlan: "After I joined Tzu Chi, I promised myself to never touch mahjong again. Every afternoon I come to Tzu Chi to help with recycling. Coming here takes all my worries away."

< Respect yourself, love the planet >

Who would have known that something as simple as doing recycling could help people quit gambling and even smoking. Loving the earth indeed generates life-changing returns.

3.§Ó¤u¿Ç¥¬®Æ< Tzu Chi's new stain-proof pants >

As with the Sichuan earthquake last year, Tzu Chi volunteers provide emergency and long-term support, in the aftermath of natural disasters all around the world. Their signature blue and white uniforms are now synonymous with compassion and relief. Unfortunately, more often than not, the white pants end up getting stained, and lose their luster after an aid mission, or even a regular day of service work. However, thanks to the Tzu Chi International Humanitarian Aid Association, a new type of breathable, but water-, and stain-proof fabric, is being tried out on Tzu Chi's trousers.

< Signature blue and white lookT >

Wherever there is disaster, Tzu Chi will find its way to deliver relief. In August and September of this year, in the aftermath of the devastating typhoons that swept through Taiwan and the Philippines, tens of thousands of volunteers were mobilized to help restore the affected areas.

< Keeping the pants smudge-free >

In the pursuant clean-up, volunteers opted for navy pants instead of the easily soiled white trousers. However, as Tzu Chi is known for their signature blue and white look, more than two years ago, the Tzu Chi International Humanitarian Aid Association began research a breathable, water- and stain-proof fabric to give the perfect foundation for Tzu Chi's white pants. The result is impressive.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Luo Zhongyou: "This experiment simulates various kinds of situations. We have soy sauce, juice, coffee, and some other liquid here. They are poured over the fabric, and all you need is a little bit of water to take out the stain.
And here, we have the white fabric. It's impermeable to water but lets air through."

< Functional and comfortable >

The fabric has proven its remarkable functions. But how does it feel on the skin?

Tzu Chi volunteer, Zheng Qinghui: "It's comfortable, breathable, and quick-drying too. It's fairly stain-proof. Normally white pants are prone to smudges and dirt, but this fabric here, even if you spilled coffee over it, just give it a few rubs under running water and everything will come out."

Thanks to the innovations of the Tzu Chi International Humanitarian Aid Association, in the near future, volunteers can wear the blue and white uniform for even the dirtiest of jobs, and still maintain a neat look.

4.¶À±Ó«n´N¾Ç< Care recipient skin disorder healed >

When both their parents were jailed five years ago, little children Liao Ziting(¹ù«º´@) and Liao Mingkai(¹ù»Ê³Í) were taken in by a family friend, Huang Mingnan(¶À±Ó«n). An adopted child himself, Huang could sympathize with the two infants, who are now only just attending elementary school. However, some four years ago, Huang suffered an immune system disorder, which led to rashes all over his skin, including his face. His odd appearance caused him to lose his job. Without an income, not only did the family go hungry, but the two children's tuition even became a problem. Thankfully, Tzu Chi's scholarship relief program took care of that; and also made Huang a care recipient. Now, even his skin disorder has received the treatment it needs.

< Huang lost job because of skin condition >

A red rash covers Huang Mingnan's whole body, and large areas of his skin are chapped. Four years ago, an immune system disorder caused this skin disease, and because of his strange looks, Huang lost his job as a car salesman.

Care recipient, Huang Mingnan: "This kind of skin disease is not infectious, but it might still be a little scary to some. They would worry if it were infectious."

< US$10 for 8 hour day at chicken farm >

With the breadwinner sick and unable to find a job, the wife takes over the responsibilities. Working at a chicken farm, Shi Meigen makes a meager 10 US dollars for her eight hours of service a day.

Huang Mingnan's wife, Shi Meigen: "I can't make much. I only hope for us to not go hungry."

< Two adopted children to bring up >

And it's not just food for two; the couple has to raise two children, given to them by a friend and his wife who were carted off to jail five years ago.

Huang Mingnan's adopted daughter, Liao Ziting: "My dad is so nice! He takes us out to play."

Care recipient, Huang Mingnan: "The children are my good karma. I won't consider the money issue. When I was little, my family's economic situation was bad, too. My foster parents still raised me the same."

< Tzu Chi scholarships pay off tuition >

However, as Huang's skin condition worsened, he was eventually left unable to pay for medical insurance, which in turn delayed his treatments. Thankfully, Tzu Chi's scholarship relief program helped pay off the children's tuition first, and took Huang in as a care recipient, where he was brought to Dalin Tzu Chi General Hospital for treatments.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Jiang Jipeng: "His body condition must be solved, and his appearance must be restored, so he can find a job to support his family."

< Skin problem cleared up! >

With the care of volunteers and the professional help of the doctors, Huang is finally rid of the his skin disorder. Deeply grateful, Huang immediately joined the ranks of the volunteers.

Care recipient, Huang Mingnan: "I once received help from others, now we need to give back to society as well."

From care receiver to now a care giver, Huang has rediscovered his confidence, and the happiness within.

5.°¨µÇ¤Í³¯ªQ½¬< Stories from the kidney clinic >

Tzu Chi's free dialysis clinic in Butterworth, Malaysia, has a regular patient by the name of Chen Songlian(³¯ªQ½¬). Blind from diabetes-related glaucoma, it is the dialysis she that has to go through, that pains her the most. Though Chen's life has been hard, she has been blessed by a devoted son, Wu Junheng(§d«T¦ë). Wu long ago learned how to be thankful for what he has, and to give back whenever he can. He now spends his time working, and looking after his mother. Three days every week, he escorts Chen to the dialysis clinic. It's not easy, but Wu believes, that since his mother struggled so hard to raise him, it's only right for him to strive on her behalf.

< Wu Junheng's happy family >

Swings and seesaws are the childhood memories most people carry. For 19-year-old Wu Junheng, things are different; as a child, he already understood, there was no extra money at home. He never asked for toys; only for his mother to take him to the playground.

< Blind dialysis patient Chen Songlian >

Junheng's mother, Chen Songlian, is a dialysis patient in Tzu Chi's Butterworth dialysis center. For years, Songlian has had diabetes,
causing her to go blind; She lives in darkness, and can only "see" with her fingers. From blindness, to dialysis: from bad to worse.
When her family departs for work, Songlian stays at home by herself, Folding traditional sacrificial totems out of paper, to earn some extra money.

Dialysis patient, Chen Songlian: "It's not hard, and it kills time."

< A mother's love, a child's love >

A mother's care for her children is an unalterable precept. But now, Songlian must rely on her child, Junheng. Fortunately, the man
doesn't think the responsibility as a burden. Instead, he sees it as an opportunity. Three days every week, Mother and son hold hands,
walking together into the dialysis room. He helps his mother with the entire process, then leaves for work.

Nurse, Huang Minyu: "At first, I didn't really see anything special. Because first, his mother can't see. She needs someone at her side, to help. But one day I happened to see her son feeding his mother, and it really gave me a warm feeling. He doesn't take his mother's agony
as an excuse to ignore her. He makes time for her, and even feeds her.

< Don't count him out! >

Junheng is never too busy to do good. If Tzu Chi has activities, like recycling, or charity bazaars, He will attend, no matter what. He seizes his every chance to join in.

Chen Songlian's son, Wu Junheng: "I want to say to my mother that, since you gave birth to us - your two sons - now let the two of us take care of you."

Dialysis patient, Chen Songlian: "My children hold my hands as we walk in and I feel very happy. I have someone I can rely on. I want them to have a good perspective on the future: To be a useful person; To serve the community; and to do something for our Tzu Chi."

6.¥Ê¦a°¨©Ô¹°ó< Dining in heaven >

Transcending boundaries, religions and ethnicities, Tzu Chi volunteers in Guatemala have been working with a Catholic-run cafeteria to provide food to impoverished seniors and children in the neighborhood. Though the dishes are all very simple, to the diners, the meals are like manna from heaven.

< Catholic cafeteria supported by Tzu Chi >

The Spanish logo "Ven Conmigo" means "follow-me". To its right is Tzu Chi's logo. This is a Catholic cafeteria for the poor where Tzu Chi helps out every month.

< Serving very basic dishes >

As Tzu Chi volunteers arrive with new supplies, a whole pot of black beans has just finished cooking.

Ven Conmigo staff, Corona: "I have cooked 15 lb. of fried rice. There are also black beans, pickles, and drinks."

< Cafeteria only runs 4 days a week >

A well-aged note pad carefully documents the numbers of diners on each day. For now, the cafeteria provides lunch to at least 63 people every day, from Tuesday through Friday.

Ven Conmigo staff, Corona: "We can only provide lunch to people four days out of the week due to the limited donations we get."

< 7 years of support from Tzu Chi >

This Catholic cafeteria relies on donations from outside in order to stay in operation. Over the past seven years, Tzu Chi has helped rebuild the kitchen, dining hall, and the water tank.

Tzu Chi Guatemala director, Ke Cifa: "We supply them with 100 lbs of rice and black beans each month. We also bring them corn starch and sugar. Basically, whenever they tell us they need something we try to accommodate."

< Poor children, elderly dine at cafeteria >

It is nearly 12 in the afternoon, and people begin to congregate inside the cafeteria. Most of the diners are children, but there are also elderly. They are the poorest of the neighborhood.

10 year-old Lusia brought a big plastic container. She says the food is so delicious that she wants to share it with her elder brother.

Diner, Lusia: "My brother went to harvest tomatoes with my parents, so I am taking some food back to him."

13 year-old Lesvia is also enjoying the meal. Her single mother has to support seven other siblings. She says eating here is like dining in heaven.

Diner, Lesvia: "The food is much better here. We only have corns and black beans at home."

< Sweet and delicious >

The diners here, both young and old, sincerely appreciate each spoonful- for they understand what it holds inside. For them, every bite is as sweet as the candy handed out at the end of the meal- made sweeter by the loving understanding that is helping fill their bellies during this, their time of greatest need.

7.»¯·Ý·Ý¿ò·R< Propelling the cycle of giving >

From Guatemala to Taichung in Taiwan, where we remember the life of 93-year-old Zhao Xuexiang(»¯¾Ç²»), who was a solitary senior under Tzu Chi's care. His neighbor Mr. Wu Xuezhi(§d¾Ç§Ó) was a Tzu Chi volunteer, who, for the past five years, made it his daily habit to visit the old veteran. When Mr. Zhao needed hospital treatment, on five different occasions it was Wu who took him there. The two men were closer than family. On Monday, November 3, Mr. Zhao passed away. Tzu Chi volunteers helped take care of his funeral arrangements. They also found that Mr. Zhao left a will, stating that his savings of more than one million NT dollars - or 360,000USD - was to be donated to Tzu Chi, to help disadvantaged people.

< Taking care of solitary Zhao Xuexiang >

This is the funeral of Mr. Zhao Xuexiang(»¯¾Ç²»), where Tzu Chi volunteers have gathered to give a final farewell to offer prayers for the deceased.

For the past five years, volunteer couple Wu Xuezhi and Lin Caijuan (ªL±m¸h) have been looking after Mr. Zhao like he were their own family.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Wu Xuezhi: "I treated him like my own father, dropping by to say hi everyday. Doing that gave me peace of mind."

< Volunteers act as Zhao's children >

Back in February of this year, on one of Wu's visits Mr. Zhao was having severe problems with his lung, and Wu quickly got him to the hospital. .

Care recipient, Zhao Xuexiang: "If it weren't for him, I would have been long gone. He took me to the hospital so I could be treated. Thank goodness for Tzu Chi volunteers."

At home or in the hospital, Wu and his wife wholeheartedly tended to Mr. Zhao. The old man had no children; both of his marriages ended with his wives dying in childbirth.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Wu Xuezhi: "His two wives passed away, which decimated his faith in life. It was at that point in life he encountered Tzu Chi. Our care and support helped open his heart."

Tzu Chi volunteer, Liu Ishan: "Seeing us was like seeing his own children. Every volunteer was his child."

< Posthumous donation of over NT$1m >

In his last few years, Mr. Zhao was no longer alone because volunteers filled the void in his heart.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Lin Caijuan: "Mr. Zhao watched Da Ai TV and read Jing Si aphorisms too. He was so moved he decided to donate his money to the deprived."

Before he passed away, Mr. Zhao made a will to bequeath his more than 1 million NT dollars in savings to Tzu Chi, to help disadvantaged people. For him, it was a show of gratitude to Tzu Chi, and a continuation of the cycle of giving.

8.µø»Ù°¨©Ô°Û¤ù< Record label for blind musicians >

The financial crisis has been especially hard on the disabled. But in our next story, we introduce you to a Taiwanese record label, whose employees are almost all blind. Mala-Music is surviving the slump, because the staff do several jobs at once. The multi-tasking owner, Wang Junjie (¤ý«T³Ç), who is also a blind musician, says he keeps his spirits up by doing what he loves, for the sake of those at the bottom of the ladder.

< Inspiration for lowly musicians >

Music wonder Wang Junjie (¤ý«T³Ç) considers the 49.5 square meter size room a music haven. This is the headquarters for Wang's record label company, Mala-music, for blind musicians. The owner, Wang, who is also visually impaired, says he hopes his music will be of inspiration to members on the bottom-rung of society.

Visually impaired musician, Wang Junjie: "I believe the music industry is similar to others because there is a wide gap between the rich and the poor. I feel we need to spend more time, step by step to help the lower-half have the same access as people on the top. This way range will decrease."

< Multitaskers work at Mala-Music >

Although affected by the financial crisis, the team of four people has been able to weather the storm. And besides being the music genius behind the label, Wang also needs to be a good promoter and business-savy as well.

Visually impaired musician, Wang Junjie: "I'm going to introduce something new. It isn't my album, instead it's an activity."

Marketing is just one aspect because employees have to multi-task. Not only do you need a musical background; you must have administrative and accounting experience as well.

"Hello, I have your tickets to the Taipei Fringe Festival."

Staff, Wu Meixian: "I'm in charge of administration, but I do other stuff as well. I answer the phone, manage the internal accounts, and when there are activities or an artist has a new album, I have to publicize it."

< Mala-Music has a promising future >

The music industry is cutthroat and competitive, and riding the waves of success is transient, but Wang Junjie's confidence in his company remains solid. Wang believes he was privileged to gain happiness and strength by going through the hardships of living a handicapped life.
