Candlelight vigil for 10,000 people
On Sunday, November 1st, Tzu Chi hosted a "Still Thoughts, Wisdom and Great Love" candlelight vigil in Kaohsiung Arena. The event was attended by some 10,000 people, many of whom were survivors of Typhoon Morakot, which ravaged Taiwan early in August. During the vigil, Tzu Chi volunteers led the audience in a collective prayer for those who lost homes and loved ones to the disaster.
< Performers send out message of love >
Dressed in traditional attire, these survivors of Typhoon Morakot rendered the song "The Universal Three No's" in the Bunun language, to express their gratitude for Tzu Chi's aid during the disaster.
< Respect for heaven and earth >
Instead of performing a folk tale, one Taiwanese folk opera artist sings to encourage people to foster respect for heaven and earth. The different types of artistic performance throughout the evening have captivated the audience and inspired a feeling of love and kindness.
< Encouraging kindness and love >
Da Ai TV's CEO Tang Jianming leads a team of staff from the Tzu Chi Humanitarian Center to perform a sign language song.
Taking place in Kaohsiung Arena, Tzu Chi's "Still Thoughts, Wisdom and Great Love" candlelight vigil was held in remembrance of all those who suffered the 88 flood. The large scale event meant hours after hours of dedication, preparation and intense rehearsals.
< Hundreds of volunteers involved >
Before the big day, performers and behind-the-scene volunteers were all united in one goal: to put together a thought-provoking evening for an audience of ten thousand, many of whom are Typhoon Morakot survivors.
< For the love of our planet >
More than 400 Kaohsiung volunteers involved helped with the logistics of the evening.
Da Ai TV CEO, Tang Jianming: I'm very thankful to the performers, lighting technicians, and every single volunteer. They have thrown in their time and energy to do their part for the candlelight vigil, an effort which moves me deeply. Hopefully, through this event people will realize how damaged our planet is. I also want to encourage everyone to put in extra effort to look after the earth, and on my part, I hope that Da Ai TV will continue to purify the human heart and harmonize society.
< Candlelight vigil's message of hope >
Set out to inspire compassion, Tzu Chi's candlelight vigil in Kaohsiung has sent out ripples of love that kindles hope and faith in every heart.

< Jing Si Publications a great hit >
Some 500 publishing houses are present, including Jing Si Publications, which brought more than 500 titles that have proven to be a big hit among attendees.
Hunan Literature & Art Publishing House, Xie Wenzhou: "It's peaceful and soothing. It instantly touches the soul. Actually, at first I didn't know about it, but I got caught up by the exhibit and entered. It felt just like being at home. I hope you can open a Jing Si Books and Cafe in Hunan, too."
< Master's books inspire goodness >
Tightly woven throughout the pages of all Jing Si publications are Master Cheng Yen's concern for all beings.
Fudan University Publishing House president, He Shengsui :"In Master Cheng Yen's books, we can feel her care and love for the world. It inspires goodness in people."
Prompted to do good deeds, participants of both exhibitions are embarking on a spiritually invigorating journey with cultured and humanistic dimensions.

Tzu Chi workshop for 3,500 students
Also in China, the Tzu Chi No. 1 High School in Quanjiao (全椒) of Anhui (安徽) Province recently held a "Tzu Chi Humanities Workshop" for 3,500 students. One of the helpers, 11th grader Guan Chaowei (關朝瑋), almost missed the opportunity, since the school didn't consider recruiting students from the 11th grade this year. However, she approached the vice principal, and won a place on the volunteer team.
< Tzu Chi workshop for 3,500 students >
In China, the Tzu Chi No. 1 High School in Quanjiao (全椒) County of Anhui (安徽) Province recently held a "Tzu Chi Humanities Workshop" for 3,500 students. With an event of this scale, it is necessary to have volunteers to help ensure that the timetable is run smoothly. One of the helpers, 11th grader Guan Chaowei (關朝瑋), almost missed the opportunity since the school didn't consider recruiting students from the 11th grade this year. However, she approached the vice principal and earned herself the duty, joining the documentation team and proving herself worthy of the job.
< Second time volunteer Guan Weichao >
Proactive and cheerful, Guan Chaowei never shies away from any task. For this particular Tzu Chi workshop, she has been assigned to the documentation team, but is also helping out in the kitchen. The 11th grader says Tzu Chi has taught her to be eco-minded, like keeping a set of eating utensils with her at all times.
Junior volunteer, Guan Chaowei :"When I dine out with my classmates, we always bring our reusable meal sets. We wipe them clean after we're done eating. It's really convenient, and eco-friendly as well."
Tzu Chi volunteer: "We have a media volunteer here, and you'll be working with her on interviews today."
< First-time journalist takes on the challenge >
At the workshop, Guan turns into a journalist, filming and writing reports for the event. When the school was looking for students to help out, Guan didn't fit the description, since 11th graders weren't considered. But that didn't stop her. She approached the vice principal instead.
Quanjiao High School vice principal, Zhang Bo: "We didn't consider them, so she came to me on her own initiative. She wanted to know why she couldn't volunteer, so I signed her up. It's really moving to see how much these students wanted to help out. "
Every interview and photo shoot is a practical lesson for Guan.
Tzu Chi volunteer: "Only take pictures of the hands and the face."
And now, it's her turn to collect materials for her report.
Junior volunteer, Guan Chaowei: "Did you notice anything different when you walked into the school today?"
< An excellent volunteer in the making >
Guan's dedication and efforts have earned recognition from her school, winning her the title of "Excellence in Volunteer Work".
Dunhuang's model water-saving farm
Staying in China: Dunhuang in Gansu Province is an historic city that attracts flocks of tourists every year. But the arid climate is driving local people away. Farmers are asking just how long they can survive without rain, while experts say the water shortage is exacerbated by over irrigation. Now, an agricultural demonstration park in Dunhuang may have come up with some solutions.
< The Silk Road to Dunhuang >
The western stretch of the Hexi Corridor is a vital section of the Silk Road. This is where you will find the 2,000 year old city of Dunhuang.
< Low rainfall, high evaporation >
In summer the sun rises at 5 o'clock in the morning, and it does not start to get dark until 9 o'clock in the evening. Nearly 60 percent of Dunhuang's 180,000 people are farmers. In this arid region of northwest China, average rainfall is 39mm a year, yet evaporation is close to 2,500mm.
Mogao Town deputy mayor, Zheng Shouguo: "In the Dunhuang area, upstream, the river water flow is relatively small, but rainfall is also low and evaporation is high. The Dunhuang environment is facing a serious crisis. "
< Saving water in Mogao's cotton fields >
In the town of Mogao(莫高) in the Dunhuang area, 60 percent of the farmers' income comes from cotton. But traditional irrigation methods require large amounts of water to be poured into the fields, which is why water-saving efforts are underway.
Mogao Town deputy mayor, Zheng Shouguo: "The irrigation method uses the water-saving models of drip-, channel-, pipe- and canal-irrigation. "
< Irrigation method uses 1/3 less water >
The technology was imported from Israel in 1991. By 2004, it was being tested in cotton fields. A pipe carrying a trickle of water, rather like an intravenous drip, supplies plants with just enough water. Before the system was introduced, one acre needed 859 cubic meters of water. Now one third of that is saved.
Mogao Town deputy mayor, Zheng Shouguo: "By radically reforming the industry structure and its direction, we have developed a highly effective water-saving and specialized agricultural industry. The specialist crops developed in the last two years are grapes and jujube trees."
< Perfect grape-growing conditions >
The dry climate, the difference in day- and nighttime temperatures, and the high effective accumulative temperature are the three main reasons why Dunhuang has perfect grape-growing conditions.
< More profits squeezed out of grapes >
After three years of tests, which started in 2006, one acre produced up to 8,000 Chinese yuan, which in five years could rise to 10,000 yuan, or 300USD.
Mogao Town farmer, Lei Guangyun:" Planting cotton earns roughly 7-800 yuan. Now grapes, after the first year, then next year, and the year after will make at least 3-4,000 yuan."
< High hopes for irrigation plan >
Unfortunately, rainfall is as low as ever. But if collected water from the snowcapped Qilian(祁連) mountains can be used to irrigate the fields, farming in Dunhuang may yet take off.
Mogao Town deputy mayor, Zheng Shouguo: "I hope in three years there will be 10,000 acres of demonstration farmland in Dunhuang. By establishing these model fields, the whole agricultural industry will follow suit to use water-saving irrigation, and reach the water-saving goals."
< Saving water, farmers & the planet >
If the plan comes off, both farmers and the local ecology will benefit. In this parched land, each drop of water is priceless. Saving water is not just good for agriculture, but will help preserve the natural environment.
Not making our parents worry is what it means to be a good son or daughter.
(1)Tzu Chi-supported children's center
Starting from today, we'll be bringing you a series of reports on the work of Tzu Chi volunteers in the Central American country of Guatemala. In the first segment, we travel 80km outside the capital of Guatemala City to a remote community children's center, which was built with the help of Tzu Chi. Volunteers have continued their relationship with the center, and regularly visit the children.
< Lady of the Ascension festival >
The day of our Lady of the Ascension is an important festival in Catholic Guatemala. On August 15, the streets of Guatemala City are crowded with worshipers taking part in the grand parade. This year it is also the 223rd anniversary of the capital's relocation.
< Faith in the assumption of Mary >
The assumption of Mary is the belief that she was literally taken up into heaven at the end of her life. The festival confirms her immaculate status as the mother of Jesus and the bearer of God in the flesh.
< Volunteers put faith into action >
Faith can be expressed in a religion, or a movement. One group of people who put their faith into action are these Tzu Chi volunteers, who are on their way to the municipality of San Agustin, 80km outside the capital. Away from the hustle and bustle, there are only mountains as far as the eye can see.
"Aunty, amituofo! I love you! "
< Children's center supported by Tzu Chi >
Amazingly in this remote region, the children can greet the volunteers in Chinese. Every one of them is wearing a uniform, which explains why they love their Tzu Chi aunties so much.
Tzu Chi held a fundraising auction in 2002 to establish this children's community center.
The following year, in January 2003, the center officially opened.
< Single mothers, high birth rate >
Most of the children here are from single parent families, cared for by their mothers. This is a feature of Guatemalan society.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Luo Suzhen: "When they are 15 years old, they have a coming of age birthday. At 15 they can openly have boy- and girl-friends. At 16 and 17 they start to have children. If they like a boy, they will live together with him, then if after they have a baby, the boy may see she is pregnant, and find another girl and move out again. So they are a matriarchal society. "
That is why it is normal for a mother to have several children from different fathers. In addition, Catholic church opposition to abortion contributes to a high birth rate.
< Centers help mothers care for children >
To take some of the pressure off single mothers, the government has commissioned a charity, run by a former first lady, to coordinate children's centers around Guatemala.
< Tzu Chi built center has 40 children >
This center was established thanks to the fundraising efforts of Tzu Chi. The government contributed by implementing a free school fee policy this year. The center now has 40 children
" I feel very secure about having my child here."
< Volunteers treat children as their own >
Today the well rehearsed children are putting on a show.
As well as building the community center, Tzu Chi volunteers are committed to staying in touch with the youngsters. Visiting every two months, over time the volunteers have seen the children change.
Tzu Chi volunteer, He Cifa: "We treat them like our own children. When we came to see them before, they wouldn't greet us, but now when they see us they are very friendly, and say "aunty" and "amituofo!"
"One at a time, children! There's enough for everyone. Don't push. Thank you!"
< A change in the children's attitude >
Change is not just happening to the way the children welcome the visitors. Thank you cards written by the young ones each have a photograph taken by their teacher.
Change can be seen in the children's smiles. Beaming brightly, the youngsters know that a lot of people love them.
< Reserved mothers now accept Tzu Chi >
Change has also happened to the once reserved parents, who now come out to sing this Spanish song together.
Both adults and children are happy to accept the help of a Buddhist charity.
< Lord working in mysterious ways? >
As mothers take home supplies, they are not made to feel they are accepting charity. Their interpretation might be that it is the Lord who is working through Tzu Chi.
Books for flood-hit school
In the space of a single month, the Philippine island of Luzon has been hit by multiple typhoons, that brought disastrous consequences for the local people. Tzu Chi has been helping residents since the end of September. In the Manila area of Marikina, volunteers have put together a work program for local residents, that reimburses them for their labors. The program has had spectacular results. For example, two mud-deluged floors of a local high school have already been cleaned, and the kids are now back in school! Knowing that the children may have lost their books and stationery to the flood, volunteers are providing free school bags and supplies, along with books of Jing Si Aphorisms, guaranteeing a happy return for some 2,000 students.
< Bringing in those locked outside >
Tzu Chi volunteers worked hard to prepare thousands of school bags, notebooks, and pens, to give to the students of Malanday High School.
The happiness isn't without reason; with their homes saturated by floodwaters and mud, and nothing to fall back on, many families are finding it difficult just to survive. How could they possibly afford school supplies?
Malanday High school student, Mark Anthony Omayan: "After I re-started school, I didn't have anything to use there. Not even a uniform."
But because of all that the volunteers have brought, they now have new opportunity!
Malanday High school student, Kimberly Manlangit: "I am so happy! Today I received new supplies --
because my mother hasn't got the money to buy them for me."
" Amituofo, thank you."
< Giving practical love and care >
Tzu Chi's practical love isn't just meeting these children's needs; even the principal has been affected.
Malanday High school Principal, Mr. Wilfredo Jabal: "We don't have groups like Tzu Chi here. The volunteers' help obviously comes from their heart. As principal, I am very thankful to them.If they weren't around to help,
we would need much longer to re-start our classes."
< Continued support for 2,000 students >
Just like a family, whether cleaning the school or helping to prepare everyone for the return to classes, these volunteers are always close-at-hand for these 2000 odd students and their teachers, keeping them steady and assured along the road to recovery.
Initiatives for better waste management
Master Cheng Yen has urged volunteers in the Philippines to raise awareness of conservation. Floating garbage, that clogged up the drains, was one of the reasons the flooding was so severe in Manila. Now that disaster-stricken regions, such as Marikina City, are well on the way to recovery, Tzu Chi volunteers and local officials have been turning their attention to promoting proper waste disposal and recycling, to protect the environment.
< Garbage clogged drains worsened flood >
Violent flood waters brought disaster to the Philippines. But after the successful teamwork between Tzu Chi volunteers and the survivors, Manila has recovered.
Tzu Chi founder, Master Cheng Yen: "There was lots of garbage in the water. The drains were clogged with waste. So that is why the flood was so severe. But Tzu Chi volunteers' selfless devotion to help others has brought safety and peace."
< New "seedlings" could grow into a forest >
Life may have returned to normal for now, but it is up to loyal residents to maintain the environment. That's why the Philippines Chapter plans to promoting recycling and conservation, with help from their Taiwanese peers.
Tzu Chi Philippines Chapter Director, Li Weisong: "In the wake of the flood disaster, we built many good relationships with the survivors; so each one has become a Tzu Chi seedling. And with more than 10,000 seedlings, we want to encourage everyone to do recycling. Plus, in case there are people facing financial difficulties they can be paid."
Tzu Chi volunteer, Chen Jinhai :"Something that wasn't originally garbage can become garbage if you misplace it. But if you put it in the correct place, it can become valuable. I hope from twenty years of experience, we can establish recycling centers and raise awareness of conservation."
< We are ready to protect the planet >
There are positive signs for a bright future because the survivors have already begun to shoulder the responsibility of protecting the Earth.
