Tzu Chi volunteers in Thailand have long been caring for the needs of children at the Watbot Nursery School near Chiang Rai in the north of the country. In September of this year, they helped a little boy called Somsak receive two operations at Banphaeo Hospital near Bangkok, to treat a terrible burn scar on his neck, which he sustained after being scalded. The procedures took a total of six months. Last week, on October 19, he was released, and went back to his village. His father had been with him while he was in hospital, but Somsak had not seen his mother for half a year. Tzu Chi volunteers were with the father and son every step of the way back home.
For little Somsak, seeing the Tzu Chi volunteers again is like being reunited with family members. You could say today is a new beginning for the boy and his father.
Somsak: "Thank you Tzu Chi aunties and uncles. Thank you doctors and nurses."
< Doctors tell father how to treat scar >
Before they leave Banphaeo Hospital, doctors hand over a handmade protective neck brace, and show how to apply medication to the scar on Somsak's neck.
Doctor, Songyos: "Currently there are still some wounds that need to be kept clean and treated with medicine. Most importantly, he has to wear the brace all day and night to stop him lowering his head, which will make the scar shrink."
< Somsak leaves hospital after 6 months >
Leaving the hospital where he has been staying for six months, there are fond farewells.
< Saying "thank you" at Tzu Chi chapter >
Before returning home, father and son visit the Thailand Tzu Chi Chapter to say thank you, and drop some change into the collection box. When he grows up, little Somsak says he wants to help other people too.
< 12 hour journey back to Chiang Rai >
The way back home is long and hard. 12 hours later, the journey finally homes to an end, and the mother and son, who have not seeneach other for half a year, are reunited.
< Father puts Tzu Chi sign on the door >
His father thanks the volunteers for accompanying them all the way home, and attaches a Tzu Chi logo and a Jing Si aphorism to the doorway. Everyone agrees, that there is no place like home.

Next, another story about recovery after an accident, this time from Taiwan. Lin Zhijiang(ªL§Ó¦¿), from Penghu, once had a perfect life. Then two years ago, a road accident left him handicapped and prone to blackouts. His condition drove him to alcohol and gambling. Later, both his parents died, his wife divorced him, and all his friends turned away from him. In an attempt to reignite hope, volunteers traveled to his home, to help him clean up, and get himself together again.
< A sanitary home, first step to good mood >
This three-story tall building is the home of Lin Zhijiang. The exterior looks fantastic, but inside, from the balcony, to the living room and bedrooms, belongings are scattered and piled up everywhere, with trash mixed in among them.
A sanitary living environment can much affect a person's mood. Volunteers come to Lin's aid first by cleaning up his house. Every nook and cranny is hit.
< The unhappy man smiles >
A bucket of clean water soon turns brown; the volunteers' efforts deeply move the unhappy man.
Tzu Chi care recipient, Lin Zhijiang: "I'm thankful to Tzu Chi's aunties, sisters, and brothers, they all came to help."
< Starting anew with a clean slate >
With a heart filled with gratitude, Lin Zhijiang is adopting a clean slate to start anew.

3.1028§ò¦a¥ÌÀM(¤T)< The medical men of Ruoli Township >
In the barren hills of Ruoli Township in China's Gansu Province, poverty is rife and medical resources are scarce. But one local doctor has been serving the needs of the villagers for over 40 years. Dr. Zhao Shenggui(»¯ª@¶Q) used to travel great distances to call on patients too ill to leave their own homes. Now he is growing old, his son has taken over the house calls while Dr. Zhao still works from the clinic.
< From youth to old age >
Carefully checking a patient's pulse, Dr. Zhao Shenggui(»¯ª@¶Q) has served the farmers of Ruoli Township from his youth to white-haired old aged.
Ruoli Township doctor, Zhao Shenggui: "When I was 18 I studied for two years. When I first started working as a doctor, resources were scarce. Qualified people were in high demand."
< Going high and low to visit patients >
The smell of Chinese herbs wafts from the medicine cabinet. There is no hi-tech equipment in the small clinic, but it sees to the needs of villagers in this remote part of northwest China. Back when he was a young medical student, Zhao Shenggui insisted on staying in his hometown. Villagers called him the barefoot doctor, because he would trek over mountains to see patients.
Ruoli Township doctor, Zhao Shenggui: "It's a problem. The distances are far. Now most of them call first."
< Son takes over from elderly doctor >
Zhao Shenggui says 40 years have gone by in a flash. His eyesight fading, the elderly doctor does not have the strength to be on call all the time anymore. Thankfully, he has a successor. His son, Zhao Weiyue(»¯°¶¤ë) is his right hand man.
Dr. Zhao Shenggui's son, Zhao Weiyue: "I'm interested in it, and I've seen my father working hard for so long. He has a very close relationship with his patients, and puts people first."
< Son does house calls, dad gives advice >
Shouldering the medical bag and starting up the motorcycle, Zhao Weiyue treats patients and works in the same way that his father did for half a century.
Dr. Zhao Shenggui's son, Zhao Weiyue: "If a call comes in saying someone is ill, I'll go out. I take care of the things that I can do. If I can't handle it, I come back and talk to my father about how to deal with it."
Like father like son, the two take care of the health of villagers in this poor region of Gansu Province.
< New spacious clinic building >
But the future is looking up. A charity organization has built them a new spacious clinic.
Ruoli Township doctor, Zhao Shenggui: "It's really comfortable. But I haven't done anything special. I'll just concentrate on treating patients."
< Good people doing a good job >
The glint in the doctor's eyes has the same look of the man who first started working here when he was 20. Zhao Shenggui does not regret the choice he made back then, and will continue to serve the Ruoli villagers until the end.

5.¥ð¶¢¾\Ū¤¤¤ß< Tzu Chi reading centers in leisure farms >
Reading a good book can indeed be spiritually invigorating. A couple of days ago, we introduced you to the Tzu Chi reading centers in Chiayi and Shalu; and we have another one today. Tzu Chi volunteer Zhuo Mingbang(¨ô»Êº]), who works as landscaper, owns two recreational farms in Taiwan: one in Miaoli, and the other in Taichung. Mr. Zhuo has made sure each has a Tzu Chi reading center, for his guests to relax and cleanse their minds.
< Transported back in time >
Walking into one of Tzu Chi volunteer Zhuo Mingbang's(¨ô»Êº]) recreational farms, one is transported back in time to the simplistic life of Taiwan 70 years ago.
< Using plenty of recycled materials >
Plenty of recycled materials are seamlessly blended into traditional architectures and garden designs.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Zhuo Mingbang: "When we did decorations for Tzu Chi, there were plenty of odd ends and pieces left. We didn't have a lot of capital, so we decided to put them to use here. It turned out quite well. It's interesting."
< Enjoying a simple life >
Zhuo Mingbang works as a landscaper. He single-handedly designed and built this recreational farm. Here, he designed a traditional cloth-dying workshop.
< An enlightening read >
This here is a study hall where Tzu Chi reading center sits. There's plenty of natural light for reading.
Visitor, Mr. Zhang: "It's so great to be here, purifying your mind by reading a good book. Out here, getting far away from the city and close to nature, it's simply splendid."
Visitor, Ms. Lin: "There is so much pressure in modern day life. To come out here during weekends, let yourself go, and enjoy a good book with nature around is so gratifying."
< Books to purify the mind, lift the spirit >
That is exactly Zhuo Mingbang's goal: to provide visitors a place where they can get away to relax and read a good book, to purify their minds.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Zhuo Mingbang: "Coming here is like returning to a simple way of life. People can dine and stay over here, so I have been meaning to provide guests with another venue where they can read and relax."
< Peace and calm in reading center >
In such a serene setting, one can't help but feel peaceful, pick up a book, and simply enjoy reading. That is exactly the purpose of Tzu Chi reading centers.

80-year-old Ms. Huang Yulan(¶À¥ÉÄõ) was a victim of Taiwan's 88 floods. Thanks to Tzu Chi, she was able to clean up her home in Qishan, Kaohsiung County. Following Tzu Chi's example of selfless giving, the elderly woman is now volunteering at Tzu Chi's permanent housing construction site.
< Enjoying selfless contribution >
Picking up a small pick, 80-year-old Huang Yulan is covered from head to toe, dressed to work under the sun. The big smile on her face is telling others how much she enjoys selfless giving and the cultivation of blessings.
Volunteer, Huang Yulan: "When I heard other people are volunteering, I said I want to join too. I am so happy to be able to work here. I told my son about volunteering for Tzu Chi, and he encouraged me to do it."
< A positive influence for co-workers >
"Live a day, work a day" is Huang Yulan's philosophy. She seized the opportunity to volunteer herself for Tzu Chi to make use of herself. Her positive attitude is an inspiration for all those around her, especially the victims of Typhoon Morakot participating in Tzu Chi's relief work program.
Disaster victim: "She is so upbeat and energetic. Looking at her also makes me feel the same way."
Volunteer, Huang Yulan: "It's OK even if I am not getting paid, as long as I am having a good time and enjoying myself. It's good for my health too."
< Live a day, work a day >
Huang Yulan's home was flooded during the 88 floods. It was Tzu Chi who helped her regain normalcy. Inspired by Tzu Chi, the old lady is now paying things forward, inspiring more people.

7.Àô«O¤ý²M¤ô< Retirement plans: a full-time volunteering >
Next, another story about a retiree who went into volunteering. Wang Qingshui used to work at Academia Sinica in Taiwan. When he went to the US for training in his 50s, his mother suffered a sudden stroke. Much to the family's relief, Tzu Chi volunteers in the neighborhood came to the rescue: an act which moved Wang to join Tzu Chi after he returned to Taiwan. When the researcher retired, he went on to become a full-time volunteer.
< Engineering expert from Academia Sinica >
A turn of the pedals activates the power generator, giving life to the portable stereo. This is a gadget Wang Qingshui created from several used items.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Wang Qingshui: "You need to put two or three machines together to make this. It's all about assembling."
Always full of creative ideas, Wang is an electrical engineering expert from Academia Sinica. An RD specialist, he seized the opportunity for further training in the US.
< Tzu Chi helped look after his mother >
Little did he know that his mother would suffer a stroke in his absence.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Wang Qingshui: "My family kept it from me, so I didn't know anything about it. Tzu Chi faith corps members and commissioners came to look after my mother, and what they did moved all my siblings. I joined the Faith Corps as soon as I got back from the US."
< Devotion to Tzu Chi despite being ill >
Wang's wife followed in his footsteps, and the couple now volunteers side by side, with Wang serving as a full-time recycling volunteer in his retirement. Six years ago, Wang had a growth from his liver surgically removed. The tumor relapsed this year, but he dealt with it with surprising equanimity.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Wang Qingshui: "I throw myself into recycling work, and do what the doctor says. I try to stay at peace with life, and just read Pumen pin everyday."
Whenever Wang feels better, he returns to the recycling station. He hopes that his commitment will stir many people to reciprocate their love for the planet.

8.°¨§Q¶È¨º³XÀô«O+°Ñ³XÂå°|< Marikina Mayor visits Tzu Chi >
When Typhoon Ketsana struck the Philippines last month, it caused the worst flooding in Manila for 40 years. Tzu Chi volunteers have been doing their best to help the area recover. To learn more about Tzu Chi, and to convey their heartfelt thanks to Master Cheng Yen, a delegation from flood affected Marikina City came to Taiwan this week. Before meeting Tzu Chi's founder; the mayor and other dignitaries visited Taipei's Tzu Chi Hospital, yesterday. On Wednesday, the group went to Neihu's recycling station, to learn more about Tzu Chi's environmental mission.
< Learning about TC environmentalism >
Carefully listening to their Tzu Chi guide explain how these scarves and blankets are actually derived from recycled plastic bottles, these visitors from the Philippines -- led by the Mayor of Marikina City -- are here to learn more about Tzu Chi, and to personally thank Master Cheng Yen and all of Tzu Chi for the help given during the Typhoon Ketsana disaster in the Philippines.
Marikina City Mayor, Marides C. Fernando: "I am also here to thank Master Cheng Yen for the work and assistance in Marikina during our disaster, and I hope we can teach our people to do volunteer work like the Tzu Chi foundation does."
< Leaving a clean planet for the future >
In Tzu Chi's Neihu recycling station, volunteers meticulously separate all the recyclables. Their dedication impresses their Filipino guests.
Representative, MA. Lourdes Arroyo: "What I've seen here, especially with the recycling, it really affects the next generation, and this world is not ours; we have only borrowed it from our children."
Watching each volunteer devoting themselves to the cycle of love, the Mayor and the rest of Filipino guests said they have obtained a valuable lesson.

9.¨»ÙÃÀ³NÁp®i< Handicapped artists art exhibition >
Right now Taipei County is holding an exhibition by 12 handicapped artists. One of them is Zhang Ruiying(±i·ç^), who is sponsored by the Eden Social Welfare Foundation. Suffering from polio, and having lost her mother at an early age, Ruiying did not receive much family love growing up. However, she refused to be defeated, and has devoted herself to painting.
< Reflection of inner-self >
An MRT station close to home and a nearby community are depicted using combinations of dots and lines with bold colors, such is the style of handicapped painter Zhang Ruiying. Her paintings are a reflection of her inner-self.
Handicapped painter, Zhang Ruiying: "Whenever I go out, and I see parents taking their children with them, I am reminded of my terrible childhood; I quickly look away."
< Devoted to painting >
Ruiying's right hand and leg atrophied after suffering polio during childhood. Hindered at school or work, she now concentrates all her energy on the family talent, painting.
Eden Foundation counselor, Chen Meizhen: "As soon as she arrives, she gets to her seat immediately and begins painting. Painting really is her everything."
< Inspirations come from daily interaction >
Ruiying spends every waking moment painting at Eden Social Welfare Foundation. Her inspirations come from her daily travel to the foundation whether through walking or taking the MRT. Painting is now her motivation for living.
Handicapped painter, Zhang Ruiying: "As I paint, I listen to Christian hymns, and I feel great. I won't be depressed about not having loving parents anymore."
< Zhang inspires others with paintings >
Through determination, Zhang Ruiying has distinguished herself as a painter. This year's Taipei County Handicapped Artists Exhibition features many of her works, inspiring everyone.

10.§Ó¤u»s»¬¨aª«< The secret force behind TC relief bags >
We still have time today to pack in two stories about bags. Shortly, we'll introduce you to a skilled tailor, who makes handbags out of scarps of cloth, and then sells them for charity. But first, we uncover the secret task force of women who tirelessly stitch together Tzu Chi's disaster relief sacks. The bags are used to pack and distribute aid at disaster scenes all around the world.
< Sewing volunteers behind the scenes >
The first to arrive and the last to leave a disaster scene, Tzu Chi volunteers always come with bags of supplies. Some of the bags are made by this group of elderly seamstresses in Luzhu Township, Taiwan.
< Many helpers make relief aid possible >
Running the sewing machines at their individual stations, the tailors, who are actually just volunteers, do the 8am-4pm shift every day; and sometimes they need to work overtime - which they are !happy to do!
Tzu Chi volunteer, Fang Lihua: "I've been coming here for many years now and I really like what I do. We're old, so it stops us getting bored, and we all really enjoy it."
< Sharing the pain of disaster victims >
Getting back to the task at hand, Fang Lihua (¤èÄRµØ) says to be able to benefit others is a blessing that gives her much joy.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Fang Lihua: "Because they are disaster sufferers, we too, also share the pain."
And pain is a feeling Lin Su can certainly relate to because the 82 year-old recently underwent heart surgery, but all she wanted was to quickly recover and go back to doing good deeds in Tzu Chi.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Lin Su: "My body was ailing before, but now it's gotten a lot better. I really enjoy volunteering so I come when ever I can."
< No delay in emergency relief aid >
Many of the volunteers are retired and have their families to attend to, but they all can say is that there is no such thing as taking a break, when it comes to carrying out Master Cheng Yen's mission of charity.

11.¸H¥¬¤uÃÀ§{< Making something from nothing >
Another skilled bag maker is Mrs. Yu-Li Yuhua(«\§õ¥ÉµØ) from Taiwan's Miaoli County. The 68-year-old turns scraps of cloth into pretty dresses and handbags, which she auctions off for charity. As well as finding good use for rubbish, Mrs. Yu has also succeeded in bagging no small amount of blessings for other people.
Content with what she hasTaiwan
Kicking her sewing machine to life, Tzu Chi Sister Yuhua is clearly an expert at dress-work; this year, she is 68 years old - but still has no need for reading glasses. What really stands out about her, though, is her ability to transform scraps of cloth from local industry into attractive, stylish dresses.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Yu-Li Yuhua: "This piece looks quite pretty - it's quite bright - so I wanted to make a little dress from it. When it was finished, I hung it up, and already someone wanted to buy it."
< What she's got is skill >
Knowing her skill, whenever the recycling centers come across cloth, they always send it here. In Yuhua's eyes, no piece is too outdated, or beyond use. With just a little creativity, they all can be happily used.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Yu-Li Yuhua: "When they deliver them, they just tosses them down. Then we wash it all, and put it here. If something's suitable, we just take it down."
< A story begun three years back >
Beginning three years ago, Sister Yuhua opened up a DIY classroom to teach people her techniques; in the classroom, they used scraps to create a family of owls, and door curtains. But her best sellers are probably the cloth handbags which she auctions off to donate to Tzu Chi.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Yu-Li Yuhua: "If other's are happy, we are, too. I always feel a sense of success when completing something. When I sell them, people always ask where they can buy them, and I say at Tzu Chi."
Tzu Chi volunteer, Lin Ruilian: "She's always working, even when she's sick, or late at night, she never rests. She dedicates her work, in hopes that she can donate what she gets from the handbags."
< True devotion >
Sister Yuhua's devotion is not just something her students can sense; her children also help out by buying materials for her - proving this recycling through re-use is an act to alleviate the planet's burden and to create closer affinities with people.
